Description

-metal articles, and has special l.reference to.; `the coating of the interior and -exterior sarg i 4,l which extends down :from the top of saidv :portion for a suitable dista-nce and dividesI faces of pipes or tubes. 1
The object of my invention is `to vprovide a cheap, simple 'and eieient apparatus for@ l u g 6, as well as .forming part of 'the inner lwall 'or tubes, which willrenable .such articles .-tof be coated on their inner and outer surfaces` in a rapid -andeasy manner 'with a metallic the coating-olf metal articles, such as pipes coatinsuch as lead and tin, "or `ziznc,'as well a ing 'such a coating to be 4formed on.
asl en such articlesevenl and uniformly and without .any waste o the :material-composing:
such coating.
To these ends my invention iconsists, genorally stated, in the novel arrangement, conf struction and combination ofparts employed g in my improved coatin of metal articles,;
. as hereinafter -more speclcally :set .forth 'and described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
4 accompanying drawing, in whichratus employed in my improved coati ofi metal articles. to l wi-th the usual,- heating lfurnace 1 under the same -for heat-- lower portion. YllVit-hin the lowerv portionsuch portion into the compartments -5 and of the lupper portion y3 located above the compartment 5. The wall 4 is provided with the projecting portions 7 .and 8 at veach .end of the same, `wl-ii'ch extend from each side of said wall,;and are adapted to form pockets -9 and 10 inv said wall and on each side of the isame ,for the purpose hereinafter described. Within the'ntank 1 are the two shafts 1-1 and .12, one of which is .placed on each side -of such tank and preferably on :an rinclinegfin .parallel lines with each other. 'llhesevsharts 11 and 1.2 are `powerdriven in any suitable manner and are .adapted to be .rotated -or revolved in the Ysaine-and inthe v roper direction, as shown by the arrows .in To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains toconstruct'f and use the apparatus employed in'my .im- 2' proved coating of Imetal articles, I will describe the same more fully, referring to the ig. 3. ',llhev shaft 11 is provided with a wheel 113 lhaving radial arms 14 thereon at each end of the same, and lthe shaft'12 is. provided with a -similar wheel 15 having similararms 16 thereon` at each end of the same. These wheels 13 and 15l `are ,also arranged vso that lthe ends of their respective 'arms 14 vand 16 will-travelwithin their respective pockets 9vand 10 :in the wall 4 ofthe tank 1 in 'the movement of said wheels through said tank -by the shafts 11 and 12, and are also varrzmged so that such arms on ythe end wheels 13 and l5 will overlap and' at the same time be away from 'each other by their being inthe pockets9 and 10 of -the wall 4. When .such arms 14 and 16 on the wheelsll-l and 15 .are :in movement thro h the tank 1, the lower ends of the same w1ll pass falong and be adjacent to the curved guides or bottoms 17. and 18 in the compartments 5 and 6 respectively of said tank, and such bottoms are connected together at their inner ends by the central raised portion 19 between the same,
The use and operation of my improved apparatus for cating met-al articles is as v 4and 6 of the portion 2 in the tank 1 are filled .with the ooatin compound, such as lead and l tin, or zinc, which forms the coating bath b, and reaches the level of the wall/1,011 slightly above the same, while the flux bath c of the usual material or compoundv for preparing the'pipes ortubes a for the coating compound in the bat-h b is placed in the upper 'port-ion 3 of the tank and rests upon that "part of the material of the coating bath b that is within lthe compartment 5 of said tank.l The tank l being thus ready for the coating operation, the pipes a so cleaned are each placed between two of the alined arms 14 on thewheels 13, as said wheels are revolved by the shaft 11, and such pipes are thus passed down through the flux'bath c in the portion 3 of the vsaid tank, and then they are passed by said wheels into the coating bath b in the compartment 5 of the lower portion 2 of said tank. When each of the pipes a carried by the arms 14 on the wheels 13 reach the raised portion 19 on the guides or bottoms 17 and 18 of the tank 1 they pass over said raised portion and are each caught by and between two of the alined arms 16 on the wheels 15, which wheels are being revolved in the same direction as the wheels 13, so that such arms will act to carry said pipes through the coating bath b in the compartment- 6 of the lower portion 2 of said tank until they reach the upper part of said compartment and then each of said pipes are ejected from said compartnient and out of said tank on the supporting table 20 at the side of said tank. As each one of the pipes a are thus passed through the flux bath c and coating bath b and are ejected from the tank 1, any surplus material from said bath b is dra-ined from said pi es back into said bath by reason of one endpot such pipes being slightly elevated on account of the wheels 13 and 15 at one end of the tank 1 being so elevated and the' coat-ing compound entering said pipes in their passing from the bath c into the bath b being heavier than the flux will hold said flux at its level, so that it is kept .in the flux bath c and does not thereby mix with said coating. When the pipes a are thrown out ofthe tank 1 after being so coated in the bath b and onto the asbestos coated table 20, each of the same can then be caught by any suitable means or mechanism and passed through a suitable swabbing device 21, which iscomposed of a resilient collar or piston 22,01 asbestos or other suitable.
material supported on' a rod 23 and engaging withy the interior of such pipe and a die 24 having a base 25 and movable cover 26 provided with similar material 27 for engaging withthe exterior of such pipe to recover any further surplusage of the coating material upon such surfaces of said pipe, and to further coat any places on said pipe which may not have taken t-he molten coating while passing through said. tank.
t will be evident that the swabbing operation on both -he interior andexterlor sur- .s
faces of the time as descrlbed, or at separate times, and
,by a continuous operation, as desired, while coating of metal varticles,'such as pipes, the pipes 1n` striking the coating compound in' the first compartment at the bottom of the tank will drive the flux previously placed on such pipes ahead of the coating oompound, which will permit such fiux to remain above said compound in its bath, and then such pipes are passed under the partition or wall into the second compartment and are raised out of the molten mixture or coating compound for the swabbing operation, all by mechanical means, thereby enabling the rapid handling and coat-ing of such pipes. l/Vith one end of the pipes bef ing sllghtly elevated in passing through the tank, so as to incline such pipes, the material or ingredients com )osing the flux bath and coatin Jbath to w ich such pipes are subjected will always remain, or go back into their lrespective baths in the tank and thereby prevent any waste of such material, as well assome of the material of the coating bath removed by the swabbing process can be saved into suitable pots or in any suitable devices, so that such pipe will receive a uniform and thin coating at the least pos sible expense. The apparatus employed bein automatic in its operation will notrequire any attent-ion or handling of the pipes and will perform its work in a clean and workmanhke manner.
