Abstract

724,037. Fuel-air mixture ; cycles ; incandescent igniters. AUGUST, P. Sept. 16, 1952 [Sept. 24, 1951], No. 23213/52. Classes 7 (2), 7 (3) and 7 (4). In means for the preparation and supply of fuel/air mixture to an engine having a carburetter 7, it is arranged that the latter supplies an over-saturated fuel/air mixture to an auxiliary cylinder 5 wherein the mixture is compressed by an auxiliary piston 17 and thereafter, by way of a valve-controlled connection, is forced into a fore chamber 11 of the working cylinder 1, which latter is charged with combustion air, the working volume of the cylinder 1 being larger than that of the cylinder 5, and the valvecontrolled connection consisting of a tube 8 of highly heat-resistant material, the outlet end of which freely projects into the fore chambers 11. The tube 8 is partly enclosing in a heat insulating material 10 such as magnesium oxide. The mixture drawn into the auxiliary cylinder 5 through a non-return valve 6 is compressed on the upstroke of the piston 17, which operates about 30 degrees in advance of the main piston 4, until its pressure is high enough to lift a spring-loaded plunger-valve 14 to uncover one end of the tube 8 so that the mixture can flow into the fore chamber 11 ; the valve 14 moves to close the tube 8 under the action of its spring, this movement being limited by a flange 16 in the cylinder 5, and the piston 17 moves downwardly to draw a further charge into the cylinder. The air compressed in the main cylinder 1 passes through a nozzle 12 into the fore chamber 11 wherein the combustion of the mixture already initiated by a sparking plug or incandescent igniter 13, is increased in intensity ; the pressure build-up in the cylinder 2 is retarded by the nozzle 12 and so prevents knocking. The engine may operate on either a two or four-stroke cycle and the valve 14 could be mechanically operated ; the tube 8 may project directly into the cylinder 1 and become incandescent to act as a igniter. In the case of a four-stroke engine the pump runs at one-half engine speed.
