Abstract

Phenol is prepared by treating cumene hydroperoxide, which contains dimethylphenyl-carbinol as an impurity, with an electrophilic compound as catalyst in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, and separating the phenol from the reaction mixture. The process may be carried out as a batch or continuous process. In one form, of which an example is given, phenol, hydrogen peroxide, crude cumene hydroperoxide and an electrophilic compound are reacted together and the apparatus evacuated continuously or discontinuously to isolate the phenol and the acetone obtained. Suitable electrophilic compounds are sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid, perchloric acid, acid-activated earth, aluminium chloride, zinc chloride, boron fluoride and a complex of any of the last three with diethyl ether.
