723,920. Spinning yarns. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. April 15, 1953 [May 2, 1952], No. 11122/52. Class 120 (3). In a process for collecting into a tow bundles of filaments composed for example of highly polymeric polymethylene terephthalate, the bundles are subjected to a treatment such that an electrostatic charge is induced on the filaments, as by frictional contact with a surface such as metal prongs, prior to or during the feeding of the bundles into a tube through which flows a current of air under a pressure of 60-100 Ibs. per square inch. The filaments may be preheated, as by passing through a drying tube through which hot air passes, preferably at a temperature below the second order transition point of the material of the filaments. Wet air may be fed to the first-mentioned tube to release the charge as the tow passes therethrough.
