Abstract

A therapeutic dentifrice comprises a water-soluble inorganic fluoride as an essential fluoridising ingredient and microcrystalline aluminium hydroxide as an essential cleansing and polishing agent, any other cleaning and polishing agent present being of such a nature as not to react with the water soluble inorganic fluoride to form a water insoluble compound. The dentrifice contains 0.1 to 2.0 per cent. fluoride, and microcrystalline aluminium hydroxide in the following percentages (a) powder 90 to 95, (b) paste 25 to 50 and (c) liquid 25 to 30. The microcrystalline aluminium hydroxide may be replaced in part by abrasives of larger particle size e.g. alumina and aluminium hydroxide. Specified fluorides are sodium fluoride, potassium fluoride and stannous fluoride. Optional ingredients are: (a) surface active agents e.g. soap, sodium lauryl sulphate, sodium lauryl sulphoacetate; amine and metal salts of alkyl sulphates, sulphonated fatty alcohols, aliphatic sulphonic acids and aliphatic substituted aromatic sulphonic acids; fatty acid amides of dialkylaminoalkyl amines and tertiary amino alkyl esters. (b) flavouring agents e.g. vanillin, oils of cinnamon, clove, anise, fennel, lavender and eucalyptus, thymol, menthol, camphor and other terpenes (c) binders, excipients and lubricants e.g. glycerin, propylene glycol, gum karaya, Irish moss, gum acacia, tragacanth, agar agar, salts of carboxymethyl cellulose, sorbitol citrate; diethylene glycol diborate, mannitol oleate, pectin, sorbitol syrup, corn starch, glycerite of starch, glycerite of sodium stearate, sodium alginate, gelatin, glycols, fatty acid esters of glycerin and glycols, mineral oil, petroleum and alcohol. (d) sweetening agents such as saccharin, sucrose, starch syrups, honey, dulcitol and lactose. (e) preservatives such as methyl phydroxybenzoate and bis (3, 5, 6 trichloro-2-hydroxy phenyl) methane. Liquid and paste dentifrices are preferably adjusted to pH 4.0 to 9.0, and in particular to H p5.0 to 7.5 where the fluoride is an alkali metal fluoride, and to pH 4.0 to 5.5 in the case of stannous fluoride.
