Abstract

A dentifrice contains a minor proportion of a water-soluble salt of nicotinic acid, such as an alkali metal salt, e.g. sodium or potassium and calcium, and/or an ester of nicotinic acid, e.g. methyl or n-heptyl. The dentifrice may include a surface-active compound, such as soap, sodium lauryl sulphate and sodium lauryl sulphoacetate, an abrasive, such as calcium carbonate, calcium sulphate, aluminium hydroxide, sodium metaphosphate, dicalcium phosphate, and colloidal silica, a binder, such as carboxymethyl cellulose, gum tragacanth, sodium alginate, and Irish moss, and a humectant, such as glycerine, sorbitol and propylene glycol. The dentifrice may be in the form of a solid, e.g. a block or powder, paste or liquid and the proportion of nicotinic acid derivative is suitably 0.05-5.0% and preferably 0.3-1.0% by weight of the dentifrice. The nicotinic acid derivative may be formed in situ in the mix.
