Abstract

Paste, powder, liquid, chewing gum or other dental preparation comprises micro-crystalline aluminium hydroxide and a dentifrice vehicle consisting of surface-active agents, binders, excipients or plasticizers, flavouring materials, sweetening agents, colouring materials and/or lubricants in appropriate proportions. The aluminium hydroxide crystals preferably have a particle size of approximately 0.1 micron and this material is preferably the predominating ingredient. Specified surface active agents are soap, sodium lauryl sulphoacetate, sodium lauryl sulphate, amine and metal salts of alkyl sulphates, sulphonated fatty alcohols, aliphatic sulphonic acids and aliphatic-substituted aromatic sulphonic acids fatty acid amides of dialkylamino-alkylamines, basically substituted esters of fatty acids. Specified binders, excipients, lubricants or extenders are gum karaya, Irish moss, gum acacia, agar-agar, methyl cellulose, gum tragacanth, salts of carboxy-methyl cellulose, sorbitol citrate, diethylene glycol borate, mannitol oleate, pectin, sorbitol syrup, corn starch, glycerite of starch, glycerite of sodium stearate, sodium alginate, gelatine, glycols, fatty and esters of glycerine and glycols, mineral oil, petrolatum, alcohol and propylene glycol. Specified flavouring materials are methyl salicylate, oil of peppermint, oil of birch, vanillin, oil of cinnamon, cloves, anise, fennel, lavender, eucalyptus, thymol, menthol and camphor. Saccharin, sugar, syrups, honey, dulcitol and lactose may be added as sweetening agents and chicle as a base for chewing gums.
