Abstract
723,425. Reservoir pens. BIRO SWAN, Ltd., [formerly BIRO PENS, Ltd.]. Aug. 26, 1952 [Aug. 28, 1951], No. 20223/51. Class 146 (3). The ink reservoir of a ball-point pen is initially closed, and to prevent the pressure above the ink meniscus falling substantially below atmospheric during the early part of the writing life of the reservoir, a gas-emissive medium is introduced into the reservoir above the ink meniscus. As shown in Fig. 1, a capillary tube reservoir 1 having a writing extremity 2 at one end and a closure plug 6 at the other, has the vent hole 8 in the plug 6 closed by a removable or frangible disc 9, and between the plug and the ink meniscus 5 there is a tube 10 having a small capillary bore in which there is a liquid 12. The liquid 12 has a boiling point between 20 and 35‹C. and may comprise trichlorofluoromethane, methylformate, or 1-4 pentadiene, and is such that gas will be emitted to maintain the pressure in the space above the ink meniscus 5 substantially at atmospheric pressure while some of the ink 4 is used up in the act of writing. The liquid 12 also may comprise carbon dioxide dissolved in water or some hydrocarbon oil. When the pen ceases to function, the disc 9 is pierced or removed so that air can enter the reservoir, and the pen will function in the normal manner. In a modification, the liquid 12 is in the vent 8, and the tube 10 dispensed with. The gasemissive liquid could be used in reservoirs of non- capillary size, where a piston or viscous plug rests on and follows the ink meniscus down the reservoir tube. In the form shown in Fig. 5, the gas-emissive liquid is held by a porous plug or sponge 15 which may be vented at 16 to facilitate entry of air when the disc 9a is pierced or torn off. In all cases the gas pressure should not be so high as to cause ink to seep from the gap between the ball and its housing. Specifications 573,747, 629,226, 652,359, 688,891, .695,621 and 695,861 are referred to.
