Abstract
A catalyst is prepared by forming into shapes an intimate plastic mixture comprising basic calcium phosphate at least as alkaline as hydroxyapatite, clay, powdered active carbon, and water, and heating the shapes in substantial absence of air to harden them. The shapes may be formed by augur extrusion and are heated at a temperature below that at which the clay vitrifies. A preferred clay is attapulgite. Starch or other carbonizable organic material may be included in the mixture. The calcium phosphate may be formed in situ in the mixture by adding a phosphate to a water suspension of lime, clay, and carbon. Reference is made to the catalysis of organic reactions, for example the hydrolysis of chlorinated hydrocarbons to the corresponding hydroxy compounds, e.g. the conversion of chlorbenzene to phenol.ALSO:An adsorbent, particularly useful in the refining of cane sugar liquors, is prepared by forming into shapes an intimate plastic mixture comprising basic calcium phosphate at least as alkaline as hydroxyapatite, clay, powdered active charcoal, and water, and heating the shapes in substantial absence of air to harden them. The shapes may be formed by auger extrusion and are heated at a temperature below that at which the clay vitrifies. A preferred clay is attapulgite. Starch or other carbonisable organic material may be included in the mixture. The calcium phosphate may be formed in situ in the mixture by adding a phosphate to a water suspension of lime, clay, and carbon. The adsorbent, compared with natural bone char or the adsorbent prepared according to Specification 561,047, has a greater area per unit weight in pores of 100 Augstrom units or larger.
