Abstract
An adsorbent for use in sugar refining or other purification processes consists of a mixture, which is bonded by heating and carbonizing, of clay, a basic calcium phosphate and a carbonizable material, which may be pitch, starch, soya bean meal, dried blood, or other protein or carbohydrate material. The basic phosphate is formed in presence of the clay by reaction of lime, hydrated lime, calcium carbonate or sulphate with phosphoric acid, mono- or di-calcium phosphate or "treble" or ordinary superphosphate. The reaction is carried out in presence of alkali, e.g. ammonia, to increase the buffering action of the product. The mixture is washed with water, dried and fired at 650-950 DEG C. preferably after granulation.
