Abstract

722,389. Inductors. STANDARD COIL PRODUCTS CO., Inc. Oct. 30, 1952 [Nov. 9, 1951], No. 27328/52. Class 38 (2). [Also in Group XL (c)] An inductor unit employed as a radio aerial comprises a coil wound on a longitudinal core of ferromagnetic material (e.g. ferrite), each end of which is supported by a resilient mounting. This arrangement reduces the degree of breakage and change in permeability of the ferrite rod when subjected to mechanical shocks, &c. As shown in Fig. 1, a ferrite rod 10 is supported at each end by resilient mounts 20, 21 made of insulating material such as " Arcuarite " (Registered Trade Mark) and secured to an insulating base member 25 by means of rivets 23, 28. Shocks, &c., in a plane perpendicular to base 25 are absorbed by the resilience of the curves 22 and those in a plane parallel to the base by a yielding of the mounts in this plane, this yielding resulting in rotation of corner 40 of the mounts about rivets 28 and lateral twisting of the mounts, the rotation being made possible by arranging that the line joining the rivets 23, 28 runs at an angle to the axis of rod 10 which is less than 90 degrees. The coil which comprises a fixed portion 12 and two adjustable portions 12c, 12d for adjustment of the inductance is tuned by a trimmer condenser 50. Alternatively the ends of the coil may be secured to suitable lugs mounted on base 25 or they may be left free. The complete unit may be mounted in a radio receiver, Fig. 4 (not shown).
