722,357. Reaping machines. ALCOCK, J. May 12, 1953 [June 13, 1952], No. 14918/52. Class 6 (3). [Also in Group XXX] A machine for reaping leguminous crops comprises a combine-harvester in which the beater-assembly is replaced by a pair of endless elevators 14, 15 extending upwardly in series behind the existing band-conveyer 13, the second elevator 15 being mounted on a turntable 28 so that it can be swung to either side to discharge the crop. The machine has the usual pickup drum 11, auger 12, and bandconveyer.13, all driven from a prime-mover shaft 19. The first elevator 14 comprises endless chains 14b and slats 14a, running in a trough 16. The second elevator 15 also comprises chains 15b and slats 15a running in a trough 17, this trough having a horizontal portion 15d to receive the crop from the elevator 14 and to provide a base which is secured to the turntable 28. The latter runs on rollers carried by a plate 30 and includes further rollers 32 bearing upon the upper surface of the table 28 to prevent tilting. The elevator 15 is usually driven from a sprocket 39 on the upper shaft of the elevator 14, through a chain 38 and sprocket 40. When the elevator 15 is swung into the dotted position, the drive to the sprocket 40 is taken from a countershaft 42. Detachable struts 34 support the elevator 15 in either of the two positions. The elevator 15 may also be swung around to the opposite side of the machine. The machine is provided with pairs of cutter-discs 45 preceding the pick-up 11 and acting as dividers to cut straggling foliage.
