Abstract
722,240. Multi-stable state circuits. STAN. DARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Oct. 28, 1952, No. 27056/52. Class 40 (6). A multi-stable state circuit comprises a coldcathode gas-discharge tube having a common anode and two sets of cathodes so that a discharge in an intermediate cathode of either set primes only one adjacent gap of the other set and the application of a pulse causes the discharge in the cathode of one set to be transferred via a gap of the other set to the next cathode of the first set which alone remains discharging at the end of the pulse. The Figure shows a multi-stable state circuit comprising a cold-cathode gas-discharge tube of the type described in Specification 692,415, [Group XL (a)], which has a common anode and one set each of storage and transfer cathodes. The transfer cathodes are commoned internally and brought out to a single lead to which positive pulses are applied at T. The cathodes are directional so that when a given anode/storage cathode gap is discharging the anode/transfer cathode gap in front of it is primed to a greater extent than that on the other. A positive pulse applied at T causes the transfer cathode/anode gap to be extinguished and that storage cathode/anode gap which is primed in the direction of preferential travel is fired. When the pulse ends the following transfer gap is fired and the preceding storage one extinguished, thus each positive input pulse steps the discharge from one transfer gap to the next.
