Apparatus for stretching an annular sheet metal article 13, such as a cylinder or flanged ring, comprises a hollow open-ended cylindrical former 10 having a thickness substantially greater than the thickness of the article to be stretched and an external diameter a predetermined amount less than the desired internal diameter of the article, and having extending longitudinally thereof from one end to the other a tapered slot with keyways 11 in its edges, a wedge 12 keyed in said slot, and means 14 to displace the wedge longitudinally of the slot to expand the former.
