Abstract
1,075,665. Spinning; tube-expanding. CONTINENTAL CAN CO. Inc. June 25, 1964, No. 26245/64. Heading B3J. A method of flanging the end of a can made of brittle metal comprises applying a plurality of radial forces to circumferentially spaced areas of the can and rotating the forces relatively to the can which is subjected to repeatedly alternating tensile and compressive forces. In one form (Figs. 2 and 3), a spinning head with inclined rolls (32) is used, which may be grooved to form a perpendicular flange (Fig. 4). Other forms of spinning head (Figs. 5, 8 and 10) use conical, tantalum-carbide &c. rolls for forming the flange (11). In another spinning head (Figs. 16 and 17), carbide or nylon rubbing fingers (118) form the flange (121). A spinning speed of 640 r.p.m. and a feed of 1.04 i.p.s. are referred to.
