Abstract

721,730. Hinges. AKTIEBOLAGET ELEKTROLUX. Nov. 21, 1952 [Nov. 24, 1951], No. 29445/52. Class 65 (2). [Also in Group XXIII] Relates to hinges for the door of a dishwashing machine (see Group XXIII). Two hinge members 32, Fig. 7, mounted in the door 19 co-operate with two hinge members 31 mounted on the dishwasher housing 11. Each member 32 has a cylindrical bore 33, Fig. 8, containing a friction sleeve 34 secured in place by two nuts 35, passing through openings 37 in the sides of the member 31 and by a bolt 36 co-operating with the nuts. Between one nut 35 and a side of the member 31 is a spring washer 40 to ensure good frictional contact between the ends of the sleeve 34 and the inner portions of the sides of the member 31. Around the sleeve 34 and within the bore 33 is a tightly wound coil spring 39 formed of wire of rectangular crosssection. One end of the spring passes freely over the sleeve whilst the other end is anchored to the member 32 as shown in Fig. 7. As the door is opened the internal diameter of the spring is increased and its frictional contact with the sleeve is eliminated. When the door is released in any desired position its weight is supported owing to the internal diameter of the spring decreasing so that it is then held by the friction between the spring and sleeve. As the door is moved towards its closed position the spring exerts a braking action and may carry the sleeve with it, the frictional force between the ends of the sleeve and the sides of the member 31 then corresponding approximately to the weight of the door.
