Abstract
721,712. Preventing corrosion. HUGHES & CO., Ltd., F. A. July 30, 1953, [Aug. 5, 1952], No. 19679/52. Class 123 (1). The interior surfaces of the tanks of an oil tanker ship are electrolytically protected against corrosion by main anodes 20 consisting of hemispherical blocks of magnesium or magnesium alloy which are bolted to the girders 17 of the tank floor 16 and subsidiary anodes each consisting of a number of plates 28 of the same metal which are secured mechanically and electrically at intervals along an iron rod 30, the subsidiary anodes extending over a major part of the height of the tank and being disposed at intervals around and in proximity to the side walls thereof, the rods 30 being attached to the floor and roof girders 17 and 18 and intermediately to the side walls by means of brackets 46. In use, the subsidiary anodes which have a much smaller volume to surface area ratio than that of the main anodes are rapidly consumed in providing a high initial current to polarize the tank surfaces, the lower current then required for continuing protection being provided by the more slowly consumed main anodes.
