Abstract
721,696. Continuous-casting machines. SOC. CIVILE D'ETUDES DE CENTRIFUGATION. March 26, 1952 [April 5, 1951], No. 7796/52. Class 83 (1). A hollow body is made by pouring molten metal at a uniform rate into a bottomless rotating mould in which the metal is cooled, the solid body being extracted by rollers at an adjustable rate. Molten metal, e.g. steel, in a crucible 14, Fig. 3, having heating means 54, e.g. electric resistance, is allowed to flow at a controlled rate on to the wall of a rotating metal mould 24 by means of a runner 16 and a regulating valve 51 or a detachable outlet 17 of definite bore. In a modification, the mould 24 carries a casing 55, Fig. 4, with a refractory lining shaped to form a groove 57 to receive molten metal. This may be delivered by a spout 59 from a gutter 58 which may supply a number of moulds. The mould 24 may be detachably supported by conical and cylindrical faces of two driven sleeves 26, 28, Fig. 2, cooling jets 40 ... 43 being arranged inside the upper sleeve and being independently controllable. Jets 49 may be arranged above the removable cover-plate 39. The tube A is fed down by driven skew rolls 23, Fig. 1, rotating on stationary axes adjustable to grip the tube, or by grooved rolls 84, Fig. 6, carried on horizontal parallel axes by a sleeve 88 which is rotated about the axis of the tube A by gearing 92. The feed rolls are driven at an adjustable rate independently of the mould drive. In a modified feeding means the mould has internal helical grooves 83, Fig. 6, and the rolls are not driven but the sleeve 88 is rotated at a speed slightly different from that of the mould so that the casting is screwed down out of the mould. Inert or reducing gas may be supplied at the level of the groove 57 or at any point in the tube A. In other modifications the axis of the mould may be inclined or horizontal, and the tube may be cut into lengths by gas-cutting, sawing, &c.
