Abstract

721,579. Electric discharge tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Dec. 15, 1952 [Dec. 18, 1951]. No. 31714/52. Class 39 (1). A low pressure D.C. cylindrical discharge tube 1, for example, a fluorescent tube, comprising at least one activated thermionic electrode 7 and at least one conductive strip 3 which is insulated from the electrode 7 but connected to the other main electrode 6 and extends substantially throughout the length of the tube on the inner wall surface, is characterized in that the discharge tube contains apart from mercury, argon, the pressure of which has a value of 3 to 5 mm. Hg, e.g. 4 mm., at room temperature and in that the smallest distance between the thermionic electrode 7 and the strip 3 insulated therefrom is 10 to 6 mm., e.g. 7 mm., so that the product of pressure and distance is about 30. The centre of the thermionic electrode 7 is located between the axis of the tube 1 and the strip 3. A construction is referred to wherein the strip is provided with a projection which is arranged nearer a normal central electrode than. the wall of the tube. One of the supply wires 5 of the electrode 6 is connected to the strip 3 by a short metal wire 8 and a ferrochrome strip 9 curved in the shape of a quarter circle and secured to the metal wire 8. Both electrodes 6 and 7 may be activated thermionic coiled-coil electrodes and two parallel strips 2, 3 spaced apart by substantially a quarter of the internal circumference of the discharge tube can be provided, the connection between the electrode 7 and the strip 2 being similar to that between the electrode 6 and the strip 3. The tube can have a length of 120 cms. and an internal diameter of 3.6 cms., and the conductive strips can have a width of 3 mm. It is stated that the tube ignites and attains the arc-discharge condition at a current strength of about 380 mA., and an arc voltage of about 105 within half a second after the tube has been connected through a series resistor of about 300 ohms to a 220 direct voltage source. At a direct voltage of 165 the arc discharge condition is attained substantially within one second.
