Abstract

721,392. Hydraulic brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., and BUTLER, H. J. May 4, 1953 [June 11, 1952]. No. 14645/52. Class 103 (1). In a hydraulic braking system comprising a rotatable braking member, non-rotatable pads of friction material, actuated by a hydraulically operated piston and cylinder mechanism, to frictionally engage the braking member, said piston being provided with a seal fluid-tightly engaging with the wall of the cylinder, and a hydraulic reservoir open to atmospheric pressure and communicating, when the system is unpressurized, through a master-cylinder with the cylinder of said mechanism, the frictional force of the piston seal on the cylinder well is greater than the force exerted on the piston by the static head of hydraulic liquid. The invention is illustrated applied to a " spot-type disc brake in which an annular disc 1 rotatable with a vehicle wheel 2 is braked by hydraulically operated piston and cylinder mechanisms 4 and friction pads 5 operable in a non-rotatable housing 3 straddling a portion of the outer periphery of the disc to engage the radially extending sides of the disc as described in Specification 688,382. Hydraulic fluid supplied from a reservoir 12, situated above a master cylinder 7 is pressurized by the actuation of foot-pedal 9 to supply pressure to actuate the friction pads 5. The piston of each piston and cylinder mechanism 4 is provided with an annular groove in which is fitted a sealing ring 15 to prevent leakage of liquid past the cylinder and also to provide frictional resistance against the cylinder walls so that each piston will not move under the influence of the unpressurized head of liquid above. When the brakes are applied, the brake disc expands axially, outwardly forcing the pad and piston back slightly into the cylinder against the liquid pressure. On removal of the liquid pressure, the pistons and friction pads remain in the same position in the cylinder and the disc cools, contracting axially, thus providing or increasing, clearance between each pad and the disc. This invention could similarly be applied to hydraulically operated external shoe drum brakes but not to internal shoe-drum brakes. The Provisional Specification refers to Specifications 650,976 and 688,382.
