In a fork lift truck the forks (not shown) are secured to a disc or drum 11 rotatable about a horizontal axis 12 extending longitudinally of the truck by a pair of chains or cables 13, 14, which are oppositely wound on the disc or drum and are anchored thereto at 15 and to the lifting carriage (not shown) at 17; movement of the chains or cables being effected by a double acting hydraulic or pneumatic ram 20, the piston rod 18 of which carries a pulley 16 at each end.
