720,871. Belt gearing. LEDER & CO. AKT.- GES. April 2, 1953 [April 3, 1952]. No. 9164/53. Class 80 (1). A driving shaft 19 is coupled to a belt pulley 1 by means of a pinion 11 on shaft 1 engaging a gear ring 8 secured inside the pulley. The pulley is rotatably supported on a hub 3 secured to a plate 2 which is adapted to swing about a bearing 5 to tension automatically the belt in accordance with the load. In order to dampen the swinging movement of plate 2 under fluctuating load conditions a spring-pressed brake shoe 16 carried by the plate 2 engages a groove 15 in a ring 12 which has a cylindrical frictional surface 14 engaging through a viscous oil film a co-operating frictional surface 13 of a fixed ring 6. The gear ring 8 may be internally toothed and the pulley 1 may be an adjustable Vee-groove pulley or it may be stepped to provide for a variable-speed drive. In a modified arrangement of damping device acting in one direction of movement of the plate 2 only a ring member is prevented from rotation in one direction relative to a fixed part by a one-way clutch device and this ring is engaged on its side faces by corresponding friction faces on the plate 2.
