Abstract

720,601. Optical apparatus. MORRIS, L., and SULIMAN, M. C. April 22, 1953 [Feb. 20, 1952], No. 4447/52. Class 97 (1). [Also in Group VI] An optical instrument comprises a central supporting bar 10, a lens holder pivoted at opposite sides of each end of the bar about parallel axes perpendicular to the length of the bar, the holders 11, 12 at one end each carrying a concave lens and the holders 21, 22 at the other end each carrying a convex lens, and the concave and convex lens at each side of the bar when pivoted to lie at right angles to it having a common optical axis parallel to the bar. Preferably the lens holders have spindles 15, Fig. 6, which are rotatable in spring lugs 17 on the bar, projections 19a on the holders engaging in grooves 19b on the bar to locate the holders parallel or perpendicular to the bar. As shown, the instrument forms a collapsible pair of opera glasses and may be focused by sliding the tongue 27 on the forward part 25 of the telescopic bar 10 within the cavity in the rear part 26 of the bar, a pair of slots 28 in the walls of which accommodate a pin 30 extending from the tongue and serving also as an index for a focusing scale (not shown). By providing means for supporting in front of the convex lenses a stereo-pair of pictures the instrument may be used as a stereoscope. With a single convex lens holder pivoted to lie parallel to and beyond the bar the instrument serves as a simple magnifying glass while if both convex lens holders are so extended a more powerful magnifier is obtained. With the lens holder 21 pivoted down against the bar and covering a plane mirror 32 in the forward part 25 of the bar, the instrument serves as a laryngoscope. A compass may be carried opposite the mirror. The bar which together with the lens holders may be made of a synthetic resin is provided with a cut-away at 31 to accommodate the bridge of the nose, and the instrument may be provided with a pince-nez arrangement or a lorgnette handle.
