Welding a butt-joint between the ends of a wire by clamping the ends in pairs of jaws which first heat the joint to effect welding and then heat it at a more remote position to anneal the joint. Each welding unit comprises welding clamps 91a, 91b on geared levers 96a, 96b opened by cams 102 and closed by spring pressure and similar annealing clamps 93a, 93b. The left-hand clamps, Fig. 1, are mounted on a member 97 slidable on shafts 104, 105 by a spring 103 when released by a cam 100 on a shaft 101 which carries the cams 102 for opening the clamps. The clamps are connected to the secondary of a transformer Fig. 12 (not shown), the primary of which contains a switch operated by a cam shaft. The shortening of the wire during welding allows spring 103 to push the member 97 to the right to operate a switch 114 for cutting off the current. In operation, the wire loop is held in clamps 91, 92, 93, 94. A cam, Fig. 4 (not shown), closes the transformer primary. circuit and the clamps are energized. The spring 103 moves the left-hand member 97 to the right to effect welding the switch 114 operates to open the primary circuit.
