Abstract
210,128. Ellis, G. B., (Murray, T. E.). Oct. 17, 1922. Riveting; solenoid actuating-mechanism. - In an electric riveting machine the advance of one of the upsetting-tools closes a switch thereby causing a subsequent closing of the circuit through the rivet, which softens, thus permitting a further advance of the tool to upset the rivet. The work, which may comprise a porcelain plate 2, Fig. 5, metal strip 1 and a rivet 3 with a hollow shank, is held by a spring-pressed block 16 of yielding material against an electrode 5. An electrode 8 is then moved up, under control of a dash-pot 26, Fig. 2, by a solenoid 20 which is energized by operating a two-way switch 28, the circuit being completed through one of the switches 32, 34, Fig. 5, these being operated automatically, as described below, so that one is closed when the other opens. This movement of the electrode 8 acts, through guide rods 14, lever 79, Fig. 4, adjustable projection 81 and catch 82, to release a spring- actuated lever 83 and close a switch 65 which completes a circuit through a switch 64, normally closed, and a control solenoid 36, Fig. 5. The core of this solenoid thereupon closes the switch 59, Fig. 4, of the transformer primary 54 causing current to flow through the rivet which, becoming soft, allows the electrode 8 to advance again. This movement acts through a guide rod 13, lever 69, adjustable projection 71 and catch 72 to release a spring-actuated lever 73 and open the switch 64_, thus stopping the current through the control solenoid and allowing a spring to open the switch 59 thus cutting off the heating current, and, by means of cams 46, 47 moved by a pawl 44, reversing the switches 32, 34 so that the solenoid 20 is de-energized and the electrode 8 &c. are returned by springs 15. Slotted links 78, 88, carried by the levers 69, 79, return the switches 64, 65 to their original positions and reset the catches 72, 82. The apparatus is then ready for a second operation by moving the switch 28 in the opposite direction. In modifications, various motors or drivers may be used in place of the solenoids 20, 36, the machine may be arranged horizontally, either or both electrodes may move and either or both be replaced by mere upsetting tools, other electric conductors being employed. The solenoid 20 may be controlled by the hand switch 28 only, acting through a relay switch A, B, Fig. 14, so that pressure of the electrode 8 is not stopped directly the heating current is cut off and this electrode will continue to advance until arrested by the cooling rivet. It is then returned by reversing the switch 28.
