Abstract

720,345. Radar. LEVELL, D. A. Aug. 18, 1953 [Sept. 5,1952], No. 22396/52. Class 40 (7). To prevent the side lobes of the pattern of a directional radar receiving aerial causing spurious indications, two receiving systems are used, each capable of handling signals over a wide range of amplitude. The sensitivity of the first receiving system is made directional and exceeds, in its region of maximum sensitivity, the sensitivity of the second system while for other directions the sensitivity of the second system is the greater. The output from the second system is subtracted from that of the first to yield an output only from objects in the region of maximum sensitivity of the first system. In one embodiment the radar system is provided with a rotating transmitting aerial 1 to which is mechanically coupled a directional receiving aerial 2 and a substantially omnidirectional receiving aerial 3. The aerial 3 is shown as rotating but need not do so, it should have substantially the same characteristic in the plane at right angles to the plane of rotation as the aerial 2. Signals received by aerial 2 are mixed with oscillations from a common local oscillator 4 to give signals amplified in I.F. amplifier 6 and video amplifier 7 before being applied to mixer 11. The signals from aerial 3 are mixed with oscillations from unit 4 at 8 and the signals produced amplified in I.F. amplifier 9 and video amplifier 10 before being applied in negative sense to mixer 11. The output from 11 is fed to a suitable display unit. Amplifiers 6 and 9 are preferably logarithmic amplifiers.
