Abstract

640,147. Radio direction-finding. SADIRCARPENTIER. Oct. 10, 1946, No. 30321. Convention date, Nov. 7, 1945. [Class 40 (vii)] In a target detecting system in which electrical pulses transmitted to a target and reflected therefrom are received by a continuously variable directional receiving device means are provided for deriving from the received reflected pulses a signal which becomes of zero or negligibly small value when the orientation of the receiving device agrees with the direction of the reflecting target. In one embodiment the receiving device comprises two directional aerials 3, 4, Fig. 4, having directional characteristics (as shown in Fig. 5) disposed at a small angle relatively to one another and moving together as a unit, the aerials feeding similar receivers 5, 6, the outputs from which (a and b, Fig. 6) when combined in opposition in a circuit 7, provide an auxiliary series of pulses (d, Fig. 6) which is combined with one of the original series (e.g. that supplied by receiver 5) in an anti-coincidence circuit 8 the latter circuit being arranged only to allow the passage to the cathode-ray tube indicator of a pulse (e, Fig. 6) of the original series when the corresponding pulse of the auxiliary series is of zero or negligibly small amplitude. In a further embodiment the directional aerials are mounted as a structural unit such that one aerial has substantially zero response in the direction of the axis of the other, the signals from each aerial being combined in an anticoincidence circuit which is arranged to supply a pulse to the cathode-ray indicator tube when the response of one aerial is substantially zero. An arrangement employing a single directional aerial and a single receiver together with a delay line introducing a delay equal to the interval between the transmission of successive pulses, the output of the delay line being equivalent to the output of the second receiver in the other embodiments, is described with reference to Fig. 7 (not shown).
