[Class 40 (vii)] In a frequency-modulated radar system, wherein the received reflected frequencymodulated signal is mixed with the signal then being transmitted to derive a beat signal whose frequency is a measure of the range of the reflecting object, the amplifier for amplifying the beat signals is such that its gain increases with the frequency of the signal applied thereto, whereby the signals received from the more distant objects are amplified more than those from the nearer objects. The amplifier may also include a high-pass filter which prevents signals of the modulation frequency from being applied to the indicator at the output of the amplifier. The aerial system employed is preferably of the wide-band type, for example, a conical aerial may be used. The indicator used consists of a frequency-meter; for aircraft use, a cathode-ray tube display may also be employed. The cathode-ray beam is deflected in one direction in accordance with the output of the amplifier and is deflected in a perpendicular direction by a saw-tooth wave whose frequency bears a simple relation to that of the modulation frequency. Normally a smooth, approximately sinusoidal trace is produced on the cathode-ray tube screen; however, if there is any unevenness in the ground over which the aircraft is flying, the trace will lose its simple character and exhibit harmonics which owing to frequency-characteristic of the amplifier will be enhanced. The apparatus thus indicates the nature of the terrain over which the aircraft is flying. Specification 533,538 is referred to.
