Abstract

800,583. Automatic control systems for radio aerials. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. March 12, 1956 [March 22, 1955], No. 7703/56. Class 38 (4). [Also in Group XL (c)] In a switched cardioid radio direction-finder, the combined signal obtained from the omnidirectional aerial and the switched output of the loop aerial is applied to a synchronous detector the output of which is an asymmetrical wave, the D.C. component of which controls a motor driving the loop aerial to the null position. Signals from the loop aerial 1 are amplified and shifted 90 degrees in phase, then switched in and out of phase with signals from the omnidirectional aerial 8 by means of a balanced modulator 3 and low-frequency oscillator 4. Signals from both aerials are added at 5, amplified by a super-heterodyne receiver 10, 12, 13 and applied in series with a switching signal from the oscillator 4 to reversely connected diodes 18, 19. The combined output is an asymmetrical wave of the same frequency as the oscillator 4 in which the positive going halfwave is of greater amplitude than the negative half-wave for errors of one sense, and conversely for errors of opposite sense-Figs. 2a, 3a (not shown). The D.C. component of the asymmetrical wave is derived from an integrating network 25, 28, amplified at 26 and used to control a reversible motor adjusting the loop aerial 1.
