In a ratchet jack the driving and holding pawls 16, 17 are connected by a link in the form of a rod 24 having abutments 31, 25, 34, slides 27, 29 pivoted to the pawls at 30, 28 and compression springs 33, 32 which respectively urge slide 29 against adjustable abutment 34 and slide 27 against abutment 25, a linkage work 35, 37 connected to a peg 26 on abutment 25, being provided to move the rod 24 endwise to produce selective stressing of the springs. In the position shown oscillation of handle 18 about pivot 19 lowers the rack 14, but on rotating lever 35 anti-clockwise about pivot 36 the springs 32, 33 are compressed and subsequent oscillation of handle 18 raises the rack 14.
