Abstract

Metallic films are applied to a plastic base by depositing the required metal as a film on a primary base to which it is not permanently adherent; painting the metallic film with a varnish comprising the plastic base material in an appropriate solvent in sufficient thickness to yield a self-supporting film on drying, drying and when dry floating the plastic-painted metallic film from the primary base so that a thin film of plastic material carrying the metallic film is obtained as a final product. When the metallic film is carried by the primary base it may be engraved, etched or otherwise treated. The metal may be deposited on the primary base by any method including chemical deposition from solution, spraying, sputtering or by the use of a metallizing paste. Glass quartz, glazed ceramic and the like may be used for the primary base. Resistors and capacitors may be made from the films. (See Groups XVI and XXXVI).
