Class 119 A device for projecting a nail or dowel into a surface by the explosion of a cartridge comprises a striker and a spring loaded hammer, the spring of the hammer being compressed by a sleeve movable and axially guided in the device on pressing the device against the surface and means is provided to prevent release of the spring until it has attained a predetermined compression. As shown a cartridge 3 is fitted in the breech portion of a barrel 1, the muzzle end of which carries a washer 11. The muzzle of the device is placed against a surface and pressure is applied to a cap 7 which slides on the barrel thus compressing a spring 15 within the cap. A pawl 14 prevents movement of a striker hammer 13 until such time as a bevelled edge 18 pushes the lower end of the panel away from a ledge on the striker support 4. The hammer 13 is then rapidly moved by the spring 15 and hits a striker 5 causing the cartridge to explode. The striker is returned to its initial position by a spring 10 A safety pin 9 prevents accidental operation of the device. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the hammer is held against the spring by three balls which, when the compression of the spring has reached the desired amount, move into a recess and release the hammer. In a further modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), the device is provided with a rotatable magazine and the compression of the firing spring is carried out in two stages under the control of a rotatable safety catch.
