Abstract
719,386. Magnetostrictive devices. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Aug. 21, 1952, [Aug. 22, 1951], No. 19800/51. Class 40 (4).. [Also in Group XXII] An ultrasonic soldering iron has a bit formed with an aperture shaped to embrace the work piece or that part to be tinned. In an embodiment a tube 1 of magnetic material, e.g. nickel, is supported at its centre by a rubber-like bushing 2 in a metal casing 3 and one end is slotted at 5 and surrounded by coils 6 energized at e.g. 10,000 cycles/sec. The tube 1 vibrates longitudinally due to magnetostriction. A yoke 7 provides a return path for the flux produced by coils 6. The other end of the tube carries a narrow steel or brass rod 9 ending in a cylinder 10 forming the bit and has an open rectangular slot I at 90 degrees to the bit axis. In operation the bit 10 is dipped in a molten solder bath 13 and the part, e.g. of aluminium, to be tinned is passed into the solder through the aperture with the bit vibrating. The bit may be heated to melt solder applied to the work. The aperture may be a slot at 45 degrees to the bit axis or a rectangular section angle at 45 degrees to the axis.
