Abstract
Aqueous dispersions of thermoplastic polymers other than polychlorotrifluoroethylene from which steam-impermeable coatings and foils may be produced, are prepared by agitating the polymer in the form of a very fine powder with water and an organic water-miscible agent in which the polymer is insoluble, which does not react with the polymer and which can be removed by evaporation below 200 DEG C. The invention is exemplified mainly with polyethylene and also with polyvinyl chloride, polyacrylonitrile and polytetrafluoroethylene. Suitable organic water-miscible compounds are monohydric alcohols and aliphatic, carbocyclic or heterocyclic compounds of the following type: polyhydric alcohols, halogenated or aminated alcohols, ketones, acids and esters, ethers and amines, all having boiling points below 200 DEG C. p Specified are ethanol, propylamine, diethyl ketone, tetrahydrofurane, gamma-chloro-propyl alcohol, ethyl acetate and ethylene glycol. Fillers such as inert alumina gel or exfoliated mica, may be included in the dispersions. On heating the dispersions to remove the water, a dry powder is obtained which is capable of being dispersed alone in water. Specification 691,550 is referred to.
