Abstract

Solid polymerized ethylene is converted into cellular form by subjecting the polymer to the action of carbon dioxide under pressure while at a temperature between the softening and the solubility points, whereby the polymer is caused to absorb a proportion of the gas, then releasing the pressure quickly and then cooling the material below the solubility point. The solubility point is defined as a temperature from 30-40 DEG C. below the softening point and is characterized in that below this point the polymer is practically insoluble in any solvent. The cellular product is used as dielectric material.
