Abstract

The invention comprises phthaloylisatoic acid anhydrides of the formula <FORM:0719193/IV (b)/1> where X is hydrogen, halogen, nitro, alkoxy, or acylamino, and also a process of making phthaloylisatoic acid anhydrides generally by treating 1 - aminoanthraquinone - 2 - carboxylic acids with phosgene at elevated temperatures. A solvent, e.g. di- or tri-chlorbenzene or nitrobenzene, atmospheric or increased pressure, and an acid-binding agent, e.g. sodium or calcium carbonate, sodium acetate, or N-diethyl-o-methylaniline may be employed. In examples, phosgene is led into a heated mixture of solvent and 1-aminoanthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid itself or the derivatives thereof substituted in 4-position by methoxy, benzoylamino, chlorine, or nitro.
