Abstract

718,985. Gas-blast switches. REYROLLE & CO., Ltd., A. March 13, 1953 [March 13, 1952] No. 6548/52. Class 38(5) A gas-blast circuit-breaker having synchronizing means for ensuring initiation of the arc at a predetermined instant in relation to a current zero, is of the type in which the arc is transferred from the moving contact to a stationary arcing electrode before quenching so that " current chopping " in the case of small magnetizing currents is avoided. The circuit-breaker has a blast passage C with a nozzle C<SP>1</SP> serving as an arcing electrode, a fixed contact D and a laterally moving contact E. In operation, a polarized highspeed primary relay K connects secondary relays L, M alternately on successive half cycles to a tripping line A<SP>1</SP>. When the line A<SP>1</SP> is energized by a tripping signal from a source A, the secondary relay L, or M, which is selected at the moment the signal occurs, is energized and is held in over contacts L<SP>1</SP> or M<SP>1</SP>. At the same time a solenoid B is energized to open a blast valve and admit compressed gas to the circuit-breaker. At the end of the half cycle in which the tripping signal is initiated, the relay K changes over its contacts K<SP>1</SP>, K<SP>2</SP> to energize the other secondary relay. L or M and a circuit is then completed through contacts L<SP>2</SP>, M<SP>2</SP> to a delay relay N. When the relay N closes its contacts, a solenoid J is energized to move a detent H and unlock a lever G. The compressed gas in the passage C is now able to move a piston F and open the contacts D, E. The time of delay of the relay N would be so adjusted that the total time elapsing from the first current zero after the initiation of the tripping signal to the instant at which the are has travelled to the nozzle C\ is equal to one cycle. Should the synchronizing control fail to unlock the piston F, a piston R, supplied through a constriction R<SP>2</SP>, is able to turn the detent H through a lost motion connection R<SP>3</SP>.
