Abstract
718,813. Plant-thinning machines. BUCKING- HAM, R J. E. May 5, 1952- [Feb. S, 1951], No. 2781/51. Class 6 (1) A wheeled frame supports a plant-thinning hoe 22. The pivot 23 of the supporting arm 21 rises and falls in a slot 25 following the rotation of a crank disc 13 which is driven from the groundwheels through bevel gearing. The interposition of an overrunning clutch between the disc 13 and its axle permits springs 27 to effect a rapid return of the hoe through the ground in the lower half of its cycle of movement. Clutches are also provided between the ground-wheels and a lay-shaft driving the discs 13 and are operated by a handlever in the middle of the frame. The same lever may a!so lower rakes 36 at the rear of the machine for levelling the ground, and screens for preventing broadcasting of the earth and uprooted plants. The tool is yieldingly mounted at a hinge 32, being normally held by a blade spring 33, and the footpiece 30 may be adjusted to vary working depth.
