Abstract
717,438. Printers' composing appliances. MUNCEY, S. O. Jan. 21, 1953 [April 8, 1952], No. 8946/52. Class 100 (3) Gauging apparatus for use in the printing art for enabling an operator to set up a square on the apparatus and thereafter to determine the lay of the print on a sheet, consists of two pairs of gauges, a long and a short pair, each pair comprising a master element and a matching e'ement having adjustable aligning members with parts adapted to be interengaged to enable the members to be united so as to align the members with each other when the members on the master element have been set to the desired positions, the elements then being separated and clamped parallel on the bed of the machine. A master gauge element, Figs. 1 and 2, comprises a bar 1 supported on blocks 12, 14, and a rod 3 supported on fixed pedestals 4, an adjustable pedestal 5 being also provided. Aligning stops 7 are s'idable along the rod 3 and in a channel 2 in the bar 1 and locked by screws 8. An adjustable centre line pedestal 9 works in a slot 10 in the bar 1. A matching gauge element 15, Fig. 4, is similarly formed and the members 5, 7, 9 on the two gauges are formed with male and female components 16, 17, so that they can be fixed together for the members on the matching element to be aligned with those on the master element. The gauges are used for the long sides of a frame, and a simi'ar but shorter pair is provided for the short sides of the forme, without centre line pedestals. The gauges are set up on the bed of a machine.' The aligning stops are set according to the measures required and the matching elements set equivalently, then the gauges are set up as a rectang'e and lengths of thin elastic stretched taut between opposite aligning stops, ends being looped on screws in sockets 23. The bars 1 may be ¥-inch by “-inch with mil ed channel #-inch by #-inch, the rods 3 “-inch in diameter and the stops and adjustable pedestals 1 inch by ¥-inch by “-inch, the fixed pedestals being ¢-inch from the ends of the bars.
