[Class 42 (i)] [Also in Group XVI] Silk gauze is stretched to the required tension for use as a screen in a silk screen printing- machine by means of a stretching device A comprising a rigid rectangular frame 1 within which are located, one along each side, four channel members 2 each connected to the frame 1 by nuts and bolts 3. Within each member 2 is located a gripper element consisting of a pair of wooden bars 4 fitting into each other by means of a projection and recess 4A throughout their length. A piece of gauze C is placed with each edge held between the bars 4 of a gripper element, which is held firmly in position in the member 2 by adjustable bolts 5 screwed into tapped holes 6 in the member 2. The bars 4 are protected by U-shaped metal casings 7. The gauze is tensioned by adjusting the nuts 3 to separate the opposing gripper members. Then, by raising one end of the stretching device, a rectangular frame B of a cast alloy is placed under the gauze within the device A, or may be within the device A in the first place. The gauze is stapled, glued, or both, to the top of a wooden frame 8 bolted to flanges 9 of the frame B, cut round the outer periphery of the frame 8, and trimmed if necessary. The frame B has on two sides guide rails 10 so that the screen can be slid into position in guide channels in the printing machine. The frame 1 may be of channel section so that the horizontal part can be secured to a base. The abutting faces of the bars 4 may be roughened to grip the gauze better.
