Abstract

717,187. Valves. CRANE CO. March 31, 1952, No. 8169/52. Class 135 A gate valve comprises a closure member 7, Fig. 1, formed of two parts 15, 16 having parallel seat faces and opposed pairs of inclined faces 23, 24 and 25, 26 for co-operation with a wedge member 27 . The parts 15, 16 are interconnected by resilient upper and lower webs 32, 33 respectively, which urge the parts together and the wedge member is centered therebetween by spring bars 34, Fig 2. Upper stops 29, 31 and a lower adjustable stop 28 are provided on member 27 for abutment with the casing 1 in the valve open and closed positions respectively, whereby continued movement of the closure member causes the wedge member to spread the parts 15, 16 against the casing seats. Initial movement in the opposite direction relieves the wedge action and the webs 32, 33 draw the parts together. Stop 29 is removable to permit assembly of member 27 between the parts 15, 16. In another arrangement, the closure member is wedged only in the valve closed position. In yet another arrangement, the closure member parts 71, 72, Fig. 8, are joined by curved webs 73, 74 which, when the valve is closed, are straightened slightly to cause wedging by a rod 77.
