Abstract

717,020. Control of A.C. motors. KNOTTNERUS, L. F. A. Oct. 13, 1952 [Oct. 12, 1951], No. 25580/52. Class 38(3) [Also in Group XXXV] The slip-rings of an induction motor 1 are coupled to a grid-controlled rectifier 3 through a regulating transformer 2 the ratio of which is adjusted by means of a motor-driven governor 4 in such a manner that the anode potential of the rectifier remains constant despite changes in the rotor voltage of the motor. Grid control of the rectifier is effected by a rotary contact device 8 driven by a synchronous motor 5, each grid of the rectifier receiving a positive potential impulse in turn whilst the other grids remain at the negative potential afforded. through a rectifier 7. A torque motor 6 adjusts the device 8 to provide phase shift control of the rectifier. A carbon pile resistor 9 is connected in the circuit of the motor 6 and is initially adjusted by means of a handwheel 11. Further adjustment of the resistor 9 is effected by slide 10 coupled to the governor 4 so that any tendency for the speed of the motor to increase above the value corresponding to the setting of the handwheel is removed by a reduction in of the resistor 9 and adjustment of the motor 6 to retard the firing of the rectifier.
