Abstract
In a process for the polymerization of unsaturated organic compounds containing a CH2 = C< group, e.g. styrene, the monomer is heated in the liquid phase in the presence of, as a catalyst, a compound of the formula <FORM:0716429/IV (a)/1> wherein R and R1 are similar or dissimilar and are hydrogen or alkyl radicals containing not more than 4 carbon atoms. Examples are N-acetyl diazoaminobenzene, N-acetyl-3-methyl-, 4-methyl-, 4,-41 dimethyl- or 2, 41-dimethyl-diazobenzene. A peroxide may also be present.ALSO:N - Acetyl - 3 - methyl and N - acetyl - 2,41-dimethyl-diazoamino-benzene are prepared by passing ketene at room temperature into an ether or benzene solution of the appropriate triazene for about an hour. The solvent is removed in vacuo and the product recrystallized, e.g. from lignin, and decolourized by absorption methods.
