Abstract

Foams useful for cleansing purposes, e.g. as sponge substitutes, are made by reacting at 20-150 DEG C., with or without a swelling agent, a polyisocyanate with a mixture of two or more polyesters proportioned to give the desired degree of hardness and flexibility in the foam, one of the polyesters, conducive to hardness, being a branched polyester A derived from 2.5 mols. adipic acid, 0.5 mols phthalic acid and 4 mols trihydric alcohol (e.g. glycerol) and another, conducive to softness being a branched polyester B derived from 3 mols adipic acid, 1 mol trihydric alcohol and 3 mols of 1.3 butylene glycol. The hardness of the foam is also affected by the quantity of polyisocyanate used and the presence of plasticisers such as dibutyl phthalate. Fillers, such as kieselguhr, siliceous chalk, wood flour and ceramic materials, and pigments may be added. The cleansing effect may be increased by the presence of alkaline reacting cleansers, sharp sand, emery and carborundum. Foams of differing hardness on opposed surfaces may be made. In examples: (1) 25 parts polyester A, 75 parts polyester B, 1 part water, 0.1 parts of hexahydro-dimethylaniline (accelerator), 10 parts chalk and 10 parts of hardened foam sawdust are mixed, 55 parts tolylene diisocyanate added and the mix hardened in a mould for 1-1 1/2 hours at room temperature to give a foam suitable as a hand cleaner. (2) similar to (1) but using 45 parts diisocyanate, giving a softer product. (3) 20 parts polyester A, 40 parts polyester B, 40 parts polyester from adipic acid and a trihydric alcohol, 1 part water, 0.1 part accelerator and 50 parts toluylene diisocyanate, giving a foam of great flexibility and softness due to the increase in adipic acid based polyester. (4) Similar to (1) but with 10 parts ammonium bicarbonate as swelling agent to give a foam of very low specific gravity. (5) The constituents of example (1) other than the diisocyanate are mixed at 50-60 DEG C., filled into a mould and the diisocyanate added. After vibration for 30-60 seconds at a frequency of 50-100 c.p.s. or at supersonic frequency and with an amplitude of 5-40 m.m the material foams and hardens.
