Abstract

A storable polyurethane composition comprises a polyurethane prepolymer and a hydrochloric acid salt of a tertiary amine, said tertiary amine being one which is capable of promoting the curing of the prepolymer and being present in the form of said salt, in sufficient amount to promote curing of the prepolymer upon liberation from said salt. The amine is liberated by a basic substance, e.g. NaHCO3 or Na2CO3 or powdered chalk which may be in an aqueous solution. Tertiary amines specified are dimethylcyclohexylamine, methyl morpholine, triethanolamine and dimethylethanol amine. The prepolymer may be derived from polyethers or polyesters and trimethylol propane; 1,2,6-hexanetriol; dipropylene glycol; 1,6-hexane diol and 1,5-pentanediol. Volatile organic solvents may also be present in the compositions, e.g. methyl ethyl ketone, toluene; fillers, e.g. china clay, wood flour or kieselguhr may also be present. In an example, a mixture of polypropylene glycol, trimethylol propane, pentane diol and tolylene diisocyanate were reacted in methyl ethyl ketone in the absence of water and dimethylcyclohexylamine hydrochloride in chloroform then added. The amine catalyst was liberated by a mixture of gypsum and sodium carbonate and the composition used to bond two wood surfaces together.
