Abstract
A free flowing composition which on heating melts and foams comprises particles of (a) a solid thermoplastic of m.p. 30-70 DEG C. containing a plurality of isocyanate groups and (b) a material capable of releasing water at a temperature between the m.p. of the thermoplastic and the foaming temperature. Specified compounds of type (b) release water between 50 DEG and 120 DEG C., e.g. borax, potassium ferrocyanide, MnCl2, Na2HPO4, ammonium chromium sulphate, sodium acetate, piperazine, CaSO4, BaCl2 and lactic acid as hydrates, citric acid, chloral hydrate, dibasic ammonium citrate, oxalic acid, sodium hydrogen oxalate, chromic sulphate, Ba(OH)2, Bi(OH)3, Ca(OH)2, Mg(OH)2 and Sr(OH)2. The compounds of type (a) may be polyurethane prepolymers of softening point 30-70 DEG C. containing 5-21% of unreacted isocyanate groups. They may be prepared from polyols and a diisocyanate in stoichiometric excess, optionally in the presence of crosslinking agents. Polyols specified include: glycols, e.g. ethylene glycol, 1,4-butane diol, 1,5-pentane diol, 1,2-propane diol, and 1,10-decane diol; polyglycols, e.g. di- and triethylene glycols; polyoxyalkylene glycols, e.g. polyethylene glycol 200 and polypropylene glycol; a tetrol having 4 secondary hydroxyl groups joined to a central carbon atom by oxyalkylene chains and polyoxypropylene derivatives of trimethylol propane and sorbitol. The diisocyanate may be aliphatic carbocyclic or aromatic. Those specified include tolylene diisocyanates 4,41-methylene di-o-tolylisocycanate and methylene bis(4-phenylisocyanate). Foaming and setting should be carried out at below 130 DEG C. Catalysts may be present, e.g. N-methylmorpholine and dibutyltin di-2-ethylhercoate. Surface active agents may be present, e.g. a polyoxyalkylene/siloxane block copolymer. There may also be present a material which is solid at room temperature but melts below the reaction temperature and acts as a solvent for the thermoplastic and as a plasticizer, e.g. triphenylphosphate or benzhydrol. Other additives may be fillers and pigments. The composition may be made by adding all the ingredients except (b) to the molten polyisocyanate, cooling and grinding the resulting mixture and then adding (b). Many examples are given. In Example IV a mixture of resins prepared from tolylene diisocyanate diethylene glycol and a polyethylene glycol of M.W. 200 is used.
