Abstract

Soluble anhydrite (i.e. that form of anhydrous CaSO4 which will rehydrate and dissolve on the addition of water) is prepared by calcining hydrated gypsum (CaSO4. 1/2 H2O) at about 390 DEG F. to 595 DEG F. The soluble anhydrite is suitable for use as a desiccant.ALSO:Non-foamed polyurethanes are prepared from moist materials by reacting a polyol, an organic polyisocyanate and soluble anhydrite in at least the stoichiometric amount required to react with the water present in the mixture. The soluble anhydrite is defined as that form of anhydrous CaSO4 which will re-hydrate and dissolve on the addition of water. The polyol may be ethylene or polyethylene glycol, propylene or polypropylene glycol, butylene or polybutylene glycol, glycerol or glyceride vegetable oils, e.g. castor oil. Fillers, e.g. CaCO3, asbestos, talc, lithopone, clays, wood flour, aluminium or stainless steel may also be added. In an example a prepolymer derived from toluene diisocyanate and castor oil in admixture with either Al2O3, SiO2, CuSO4 (anhydrous), MgSO4 (anhydrous), Portland cement, CaSO4 (anhydrous ignited) or CaSO4 (soluble anhydrite) was reacted with castor oil in the presence of n-coco morpholine.
