Abstract

A rubber-like material is made by reacting an aliphatic linear polyester with a diisocyanate in amount in excess of that capable of reacting with the end groups of the polyester, and reacting the polymer so obtained with water in the form of water of crystallization of a salt. Specified polyesters are the reaction products of ethylene, a propylene or a butylene glycol with adipic, sebacic or methyl-adipic acid. Specified diisocyanates are the naphthalene, 2 : 4- or 2.6-toluene and 1-chlorobenzene-2 : 4-diisocyanates. Specified salts are sodium sulphate, tetraborate, pyrophosphate and carbonate; potassium aluminium sulphate; potassium borate; magnesium sulphate, metaborate and orthophosphate; and calcium sulphate. In example a polyethylene adipate wax (M.W. 2,500; hydroxyl number 41; acid number 2.5) is heated at 130-140 DEG C. with 1 : 5-naphthalene diisocyanate. The hydrated salt is then added and when the mixture disintegrates into a rubbery crumb it is moulded into a sheet at 163 DEG C. and 0.5 tons per square inch pressure.
