Abstract

Porous or homogeneous polyurethanes of rigid, semi-rigid or elastic consistency are made by reacting an activator, which is a reaction accelerator and/or a cross-linking agent, with either a polyisocyanate and an organic polymer which has at least two reactive hydrogen atoms and is capable of forming polyurethanes, e.g. at least one polyisocyanate and at least one hydroxyl group-containing polyester, or at least one isocyanate-modified polyester, all the components to be mixed being in the liquid state, wherein at least one of the components is subjected to a high pressure and introduced under pressure into the other component(s) in a confined mixing chamber, thereby effecting mixing of the components, and the resulting mixture is discharged while in a liquid state from the mixing chamber. Preferably one of the liquid components is a polyisocyanate in which is incorporated an anhydrous oil, e.g. paraffin oil, or an anhydrous surface active agent. Components specified are: isocyanates-2.4-toluylene-and 1.5-naphthylene-di-isocyanates; polyesters containing hydroxyl groups-branched polyesters derived from phthalic and adipic acids and stable isocyanate modified linear polyesters from diethylene glycol and adipic acid with or without pentaerythritol; cross-linking agents and accelerators-butylene glycol, sodium phenates, hexahydrodimethylaniline, reaction products of N.N1-diethylamino-ethanol and phenylisocyanate-ester-amines, and water. The activator may be introduced under pressure into the other component(s), or be intermittently injected into a continuously flowing mixture of the other component(s), if desired with subsequent homogenization of the reactive mixture. In a modification, the polyisocyanate and the hydroxyl-containing polyester are conveyed separately to a mixing chamber into which they are injected under pressure, and the activator is either conveyed separately and injected into the mixing chamber under pressure, or is conveyed to the mixing chamber in admixture with one of the liquid components. Suitable apparatus for making the above products is described and claimed in Specification 769,682 [Group III]. Numerous applications of the products are specified.
