Abstract
A method of making bodies of a solidified cross-linked polyurethane made by reacting (a) an organic compound having two active hydrogen atoms to the molecule as determined by a positive Zerewitinoff test, (b) a cross-linking agent having active terminal hydrogen atoms and (c) an organic polyisocyanate present in a molecular amount that exceeds the sum of the molecular amounts of the organic compound and the cross-linking agent, the reaction being continued until all possible chemical interaction between the three ingredients has taken place so as to form a solidified polymer consisting essentially of a linear polyurethane cross-linked to another linear polyurethane to the maximum possible extent, comprises heating the solidified polymer as sole reactive ingredient to an elevated temperature sufficient to make it flowable, reworking the polymer while it is still flowable, and then shaping the flowable polyurethane to the desired form. Specified organic compounds are linear and branched polyesters, polyethers and polyesteramides, many such polymers, polyisocyanates, cross-linking agents, catalysts and accelerators being listed. In the examples, polymers made from: (2) ethylene glycol and adipic acid; (3) 1:2-propylene glycol and adipic acid; (4) 2:3-butylene glycol and adipic acid and (5) phthalic anhydride and ethanolamine are reacted with: (2) to (4) diphenyl methane -4:4-diisocyanate and 1:4-butane diol and (5) hexamethylene diisocyanate and ethylene glycol, the resultant cross-linked polyurethanes being re-worked by the process of the invention. Specification 914,825 is referred to.
